Jose Cifuentes sticking point named as Rangers hold talks with Aris

Jose Cifuentes sticking point named as Rangers hold talks with Aris

Rangers will hopefully have plenty of cash to play with in the summer transfer window after the 49ers Enterprises takeover goes through.

There will be less of a need to generate money through player sales before getting new guys in, which Philippe Clement would regularly reference during transfer windows.

But the club will still want to rid some of the deadwood, including those out on loan like Rabbi Matondo, Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies, among others.

Jose Cifuentes, currently on loan at Greek side Aris Thessaloniki, is another.

It is believed Aris have a £4.2million option to buy the midfielder permanently in the summer.

But there have been suggestions the Greek Super Lig side could struggled to pay that amid their fight to finish in the European spots.

The chances of a permanent move for Cifuentes were rated ‘stuck’ at one stage due to his underwhelming displays.

But an upturn in performances from the Ecuadorian got him back in the manager’s good books.

Aris hoping to strike deal with Rangers for Cifuentes

A new report states Aris are hoping to sign the player permanently but will ask Rangers to accept a lower price.

The Rangers Review state that club chiefs have entered into talks with counterparts at Ibrox to try and strike a deal for the 25-year-old.

They are keen to find a “more manageable” level within their budget to make Cifuentes their player.

Rangers paid £1m to sign Cifuentes from Los Angeles FC in 2023, so would still hope to make a profit.

How has Cifuentes being faring at Aris?

For a while, it looked like the midfielder would be returning to Ibrox early after an underwhelming start to his spell in Greece.

But after a change in manager, new boss Apostolos Mantzios seemed to light a fire within Cifuentes and he hasn’t looked back.

He is now a key player and has made 25 total appearances, 23 in the league, scoring once and assisting twice.
