Leeds United have January transfer avenue closed after latest update

Leeds United’s links with Newcastle United defender Matt Targett have perplexed some of those inside Elland Road in recent days with deadline day fast approaching.

Some reports have linked Daniel Farke’s side with the left-back regarding a potential move to the Whites for the second half of the campaign. However, LeedsLive reported earlier this week that Targett was not a name under consideration by Leeds this month, despite Junior Firpo’s contract running down.

Left-back is not an area of the pitch the Whites are looking to strengthen this month, with other areas of the pitch a priority. Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe all but confirmed that Targett would remain at St. James’ Park in his press conference this morning.

The Magpies have bid farewell to winger Miguel Almiron, who returned to MLS club Atlanta United, with Howe not expecting any more departures this month, despite Targett’s links to Elland Road.

Speaking to our sister title ChronicleLive, Howe said: “As we stand now, currently I don’t [see anymore leaving] – but things can change. As we stand at the moment, I expect the squad to remain the same.”

Farke remains hopeful he can bolster the Whites’ squad before the deadline on Monday night, with Leeds two points clear at the top of the Championship table. Speaking at his latest press conference, the Whites’ boss said: “No special meeting for the final days. We are on the same page. We don’t make signings out of panic reasons.

“I like to be honest about it. I take the decision if I feel there is a player who can fit into our group. The financial aspect is for others to make, then if all boxes are ticked then we will do something.

“When we are in this position it is easier to track players. If its a loan then to be there not just a few months but for the future. If a player is just looking for game time then it’s not that easy.

“You can’t guarantee that. There is lots of competition. Some can be reluctant because we have really good players. It’s always a bit tricky on loans because they know they are only coming for three months.”
