Leeds United news round-up: Solomon talks held as shock £45m claim made

Leeds United are edging towards Championship promotion glory after their win at Bramall Lane.

The Whites secured a huge 2-1 against Sheffield United to send them five points clear at the top of the league.

 

This leaves Daniel Farke with a clear sight of a place in the Premier League and now his side will be hopeful of some luck in the coming weeks.

One of those supporters was reportedly Peter Lowy, an Elland Road board member, a key figure for 49ers Enterprises, and a lifelong Leeds fan.

 

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported on 26 February that the chief opted to take a place in the stands against the Blades rather than in the directors’ boxes as would be expected.

 

Lowy, who is heir to the Westfield Group and a former co-CEO of the shopping centre giant, bought into Leeds via the 49ers in 2021 and is one of the Lowy Family Group’s biggest investors.

Everton hold internal talks over Manor Solomon transfer

It’s understood that the Toffees have identified Solomon as a potential option to play out wide under David Moyes at Goodison Park.

 

Give Me Sport’s Ben Jacobs reported on 26 February that the Merseyside outfit have held internal talks over a potential deal to sign the Israel international.

 

Leeds may want to keep the 25-year-old Tottenham loanee beyond the summer regardless of the fact that they do not have the option to buy him.

 

If they are to secure his services permanently, they will have to negotiate a transfer fee with Ange Postecoglou and Spurs.

 

Ampadu injury timeline emerges at Leeds United

Ampadu has one of the most important players at Elland Road under Farke in the push towards securing a place in the Premier League.

 

As a result, it was a blow to be without the Wales international for the trip to face Sheffield United and now the German head coach has revealed the reason for his absence.

 

Farke has also shared a potential return date for the 24-year-old as the Whites enter the business end of the Championship season.

 

In quotes reported by Beren Cross (27 February), Farke said: “A knee injury. Cartilage issue. Complicated.

 

“Surgery would have meant Ampadu out for the season. Decided to go conservative route. Good chance rehab will be successful, but still means he will be out for four to six weeks.”

 

Kieran Maguire shares wage bill update at Elland Road

There has been a consistent reminder throughout a spell in the second tier that the Whites have one of the most expensively-assembled and well-paid squads in Championship history.

 

This isn’t a surprise after coming down from the Premier League with some players on huge contracts.

 

However, accusations that the Elland Road wage bill is the second-tier’s biggest ever have been corrected by football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who posted on X (26 February) with a table of his findings.

Maguire said: “I’ve been contacted by some fans of Leeds United after accusations that their club has had the highest wage bills in the Championship. Those accusations are incorrect.”

 

This will come as a plus to the LS11 faithful who can ignore any criticism that has been aimed at their squad during their mission to earn promotion.

 

Dan James transfer: Shock £45m Leeds claim made on talkSPORT

Dean Saunders has given his verdict on Dan James after the form he’s been in for Leeds United this season.

 

However, the former Wales international was completely wide of the mark when assessing his compatriot’s previous valuation.

 

“You’ve got Dan James who cost £45million; he’s ripping the Championship up, is he good enough to play for a top-four team?” Saunders asked.

 

Leeds, of course, paid ‘only’ £25m to sign James from Manchester United in August 2021.
