Leeds United touted as potential destination for Bundesliga midfielder ‘close’ to Daniel Farke

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke holds a ‘close’ connection with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Julian Weigl as a summer exit looms, as per Bild.

Leeds United are currently focused on their bid to rise back to the Premier League. LUFC are top of the Championship table and in flying form.

The Whites continued their march for the second-tier title with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Watford on Tuesday night. It was a rare outing in with they had less possession and general control of the ball, but more rampant finishing made for another successful night at the office.

 

Away from the pitch though, the club hierarchy will have eyes on future transfer plans. There will be no complacency at Elland Road, but leading figures will be planning for Premier League recruitment if promotion is won.

 

Now, Leeds United have been touted as a potential destination for German midfielder Julian Weigl.

 

While not concretely linked or said to have interest in the 29-year-old, Bild states that Weigl has a ‘close’ connection with LUFC boss Farke. A move away from Borussia Monchengladbach could come this summer too, with England regularly tipped as a possible move.

 

There is no active desire to sell Weigl at Monchengladbach at this stage, but change is afoot this summer and there could be outgoings.

Weigl and Farke’s time together

When Leeds United boss Farke was in charge of Borussia Monchengladbach, he signed Weigl on loan from Benfica.

The German boss played the midfielder 24 times across the 2022/23 season, with his action limited around the middle of the season due to injury.

However, when available, Weigl started regularly. Farke would depart at the end of that campaign but the loan man stayed put and signed permanently

 

The former Germany international has since gone on to play 81 times for Monchengladbach, chipping in with three goals and five assists. He’s under contract until the summer of 2028.

Enough Weigl room at LUFC?

Looking at the Leeds United squad, there’s definitely scope for a midfield addition in the summer transfer window.

 

Josuha Guilavogui sees his contract expire at the end of the season and it seems unlikely that his deal is extended. Joe Rothwell has been a big hit on loan but it remains to be seen if there would be interest in a permanent deal, especially if LUFC are promoted.

 

That means that as it stands, Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev are the only senior midfielders contracted to the club beyond the end of the 2024/25 season. There’s definitely room for midfield recruits at Elland Road, but time will tell if the close connection between Farke and Weigl leads to any firm transfer interest.
