Muscat had agreed in principle to take over at Ibrox and was even preparing his backroom staff ahead of an official announcement. However, sources close to the situation now claim the deal has stalled due to internal disagreements involving Thelwell and chief executive Graeme Stewart — throwing the entire process into doubt.
Thelwell, who only recently joined the club to oversee recruitment and long-term football planning, is said to have clashed with members of the Rangers board over the structure of Muscat’s contract and his level of control over player signings. Those tensions have reportedly left negotiations “on the brink,” sparking frustration within the hierarchy and among supporters desperate for stability.
The latest twist has led to renewed calls from sections of the Rangers fanbase for Thelwell to be held accountable, with many believing his handling of the managerial search has undermined progress.
Muscat — a former Rangers defender who has enjoyed success in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos — was seen as the ideal candidate to restore the club’s identity and bring back the aggressive, attacking brand of football the Ibrox crowd craves.
But with talks now close to collapse, Rangers are at risk of returning to square one in their managerial search, just days after appearing to have found their man.
