Rangers eye ‘top drawer’ manager, new Barry Ferguson role on cards post takeover
Barry Ferguson is contracted to Rangers as their head coach only until June, but a new role may be waiting for him when the new owners take charge.
After a 2-0 defeat against St Mirren forced Rangers’ hands and left them with no choice but to send Philippe Clement packing, they brought in Ferguson as a caretaker manager until the end of the season, with club icons Billy Dodds, Neil McCann and Allan McGregor also coming in.
With a consortium involving Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises and Leeds United in advanced talks over a takeover, the Light Blues are holding off the appointment of a permanent manager for the time being.
Some have thrown Ferguson’s name into the hat for the role of permanent manager, but there are also other candidates in the mix, with David Wagner being one of them.

Weighing in on the possibility of Ferguson staying in charge of Rangers beyond this season, Michael Gannon pointed out how the former captain did well to get a reaction out of the team in their 4-2 win against Kilmarnock on Wednesday, 26 February.
The journalist admitted that the game could have been a nightmare for the 47-year-old as the Gers went two goals behind within 14 minutes of kick-off, but the interim head coach ultimately managed to claim a win.
Speaking on Daily Record’s Game On show (28 February): “The response that Barry Ferguson got out of that squad, given the first 20 minutes – that was such a shambles, it looked as though it was going to be an absolute nightmare for him – to get a response was good.”

Gannon, though, reckons Rangers must hire a “top drawer” manager to compete with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, but tipped Ferguson for a behind-the-scenes role under the new regime.

“I think Barry [Ferguson] has got enough in his locker to be a part of this new regime, but as a manager, I think they need someone who’s going to be top drawer to take on Brendan Rodgers and Celtic under the new dawn”, the journalist added.
Ferguson realise Ibrox dream after 10 years
Ferguson would have been dreaming of managing Rangers since hanging up his boots and would be delighted about making that come true, albeit on a temporary basis.
The Scot forayed into coaching even before he stopped playing, but did not have a managerial job since leaving Alloa Athletic in 2022.
Regardless of the circumstances, Ferguson will certainly make a case to keep his place as the Ibrox outfit’s head coach beyond this season.
