Gobsmacked Rangers fans were forced back in time as Philippe Clement’s appeal to avoid the sack at Monaco hit home to a fanbase on the brink.

The beleaguered Belgian earned a vote of confidence, for now, from new Ibrox supremo Patrick Stewart, however, the former Manchester United decision maker’s view isn’t shared in the Rangers sphere. Pundits and punters want Clement gone as his side sit 18 points behind Celtic. Leading ultras The Union Bears concede the 50-year-old isn’t the only sinner in their eyes but they will walk out of Ibrox after 55 minutes during Sunday’s game against St Johnstone.

And an extract of Clement’s final appeal to remain at the helm at Monaco has added further intrigue to a man on the brink in the eyes of supporters who watched their side fail to win four consecutive away games between a shock 3-0 triumph over Celtic. The Belgian knows all about grinding to a halt – a wretched run of one win in the final seven games of the 22/23 Ligue 1 season put paid to Monaco’s bid for European football.

And it’s Clement’s impassioned address in his final press conference which Rangers punters reckon could be from any game in the previous week. Speaking days before the axe, Clement said: “It’s up to the management. I am not someone who escapes responsibility. I always look at myself in the mirror. I always want to improve. I have a heart for this club. I want to fight for the club, but it’s up to the management to decide that. That’s the world of football. Before Lens, we spoke about extending, and everyone was happy. Now we’re all disappointed, me first and foremost. We will see.”

The former Brugge boss knows the time has to be now for a last-gasp bid to save his Rangers career with St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Fraserburgh all visiting Ibrox in the next week.
