EXCLUSIVE:Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell has opened up on the club’s recruitment strategy, insisting the Ibrox side must strike the right balance between winning immediately and building a sustainable future.

Speaking after a summer of major change at Ibrox, which saw a net spend of around £20 million and several new arrivals, Thelwell said that success on the pitch remains the ultimate priority — but stressed that longer-term planning is equally vital.

“We know what the job is: to win. And we need to win today,” Thelwell explained. “But we also need to think about tomorrow — ensuring the club is in the right place for years to come.”

The sporting director revealed that Rangers are focused on bringing in “young and hungry players” who can make an impact immediately while developing into long-term assets for the squad. He cautioned against building a team that is either too inexperienced or too reliant on ageing players, emphasising the need for balance.

Collaboration with head coach Russell Martin and new technical director Dan Purdy has been placed at the centre of the club’s recruitment model, with signings designed to fit the playing philosophy. Thelwell also highlighted the importance of the loan market, describing it as a tool that allows Rangers to access players who might otherwise be financially out of reach.

Financial sustainability, however, remains key. Thelwell admitted that significant spending cannot be repeated in every transfer window, underlining that Rangers will need to generate funds by trading players at the right time.

Beyond first-team business, Thelwell is keen to strengthen the club’s academy system, women’s team, and support infrastructure, ensuring a clear pathway for young talent while aligning all teams under the same values of intensity, hard work and respect.

“This is about building something that lasts,” he said. “We want to create an environment where players know they can develop, and supporters can see a clear identity across the club.”

With pressure already mounting on Martin after a difficult start to the season, Thelwell acknowledged that performances have not always matched expectations. But he believes Rangers’ foundations are now in place to deliver both immediate improvement and long-term stability.
