Scottish folk singer Iona Fyfe has publicly criticised Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser after his controversial social media post following the sacking of Russell Martin as Rangers manager.
Fraser, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, sparked outrage after taking to X (formerly Twitter) in the wake of Martin’s dismissal. His post read:
“No more vegans, Bhuddists or Green Party members please @RangersFC.”
The comment appeared to mock Martin’s personal beliefs and lifestyle — the 38-year-old coach is known to be vegan, has spoken about his Buddhist principles, and has shown support for environmental causes.
Fyfe, a prominent voice in Scottish culture and social issues, swiftly responded to Fraser’s message with a sharp rebuke, calling out the MSP’s spelling error while highlighting the insensitivity of his post.
She wrote:
“Can’t even spell Buddhist correctly.”
The exchange quickly gained traction online, with many social media users accusing Fraser of being “crass,” “out of touch,” and “embarrassing.”
Political rivals also weighed in, with several Scottish Parliament members describing Fraser’s tweet as “cringeworthy” and “beneath the standards expected of an MSP.”
It has since been reported that a member of the public has filed a police complaint against Fraser over the remark, though it remains unclear whether formal action will follow.
Russell Martin’s dismissal from Rangers came after a poor start to the season, ending his short and turbulent reign at Ibrox. However, the fallout from his departure has now taken a political turn — drawing criticism from figures far beyond the football world.
