Rangers director Andrew Cavenagh is said to be “moving at speed” to identify and appoint the club’s next permanent manager, with several alternatives to Steven Gerrard already interviewed as the Ibrox hierarchy accelerates their recruitment process.

Following the dismissal of Russell Martin after a disappointing start to the season, Cavenagh and the new ownership group led by 49ers Enterprises are determined to act swiftly and decisively in reshaping the club’s direction. Although Steven Gerrard — the title-winning former boss — remains a sentimental favourite among supporters, sources suggest that Rangers are exploring a range of other candidates as part of a “rigorous and modern” managerial review.

Gerrard has held informal discussions regarding a potential return to Ibrox, but it is believed that no agreement has been reached, with talks described as “respectful but non-committal.” In the meantime, Cavenagh has overseen interviews with a shortlist of coaches who align with the club’s new long-term strategy — focusing on progressive football, player development, and European competitiveness.

Cavenagh, who has taken a leading role in football operations since the summer takeover, is reportedly keen to finalise an appointment before the next international break, ensuring the new manager has adequate time to prepare for the winter transfer window.

A Rangers insider told Ibrox News:

While Gerrard remains in contention, other names such as Davide Ancelotti, Rob Edwards, and Frank Lampard have been discussed internally, with formal interviews already underway.
