Sources close to Ibrox suggest the club have already begun assembling Muscat’s prospective backroom team, with former Rangers winger Neil McCann lined up to join him. McCann is also tipped to take interim charge for the upcoming clash against Dundee United while negotiations continue behind the scenes.
Muscat, currently in charge of Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, remains under contract until the end of next year. Rangers would therefore need to pay a hefty sum to release him early — a figure that could exceed seven figures, according to reports.
The Australian tactician has emerged as the clear favourite to replace Russell Martin after impressing with his attacking brand of football and strong leadership credentials. Club legend Alex McLeish has publicly backed Muscat for the job, calling him “a perfect fit for Rangers.”
However, timing may become an issue. The Chinese Super League season runs until late November, and Muscat may be reluctant to walk away before its conclusion. Rangers, battling to stay in contention domestically, may have to rely on interim management for several weeks.
While Danny Röhl and other names have been floated, Muscat’s candidacy appears strongest — though it hinges on Rangers’ willingness to meet Shanghai Port’s financial demands.
For now, the Ibrox hierarchy are pushing to finalise terms swiftly, hoping to have Muscat and his team in place before the end of the month.
