Fenerbahce 1 Rangers 3: Barry Ferguson makes his pitch for the Ibrox job as he stuns dugout master Jose Mourinho

Rangers’ interim manager, Barry Ferguson, made an impressive European coaching debut against José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe, who were on an 18-match unbeaten streak. The Scottish side took an early lead when Cyriel Dessers capitalized on defensive errors to round goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat and score.

Fenerbahçe’s Alexander Djiku equalized, but Rangers regained the lead before halftime with a goal from Václav Černý. In the second half, Černý secured his brace, sealing the victory for Rangers. Despite Fenerbahçe’s efforts, including two VAR-disallowed goals, they couldn’t overcome Rangers’ resilient defense and goalkeeper Jack Butland’s crucial saves.

Mourinho candidly assessed his team’s performance, stating “Everything” went wrong, and acknowledged the challenge ahead in the return leg in Glasgow.

This victory provides Rangers with a significant advantage as they prepare for the second leg at Ibrox Stadium on March 13,

2025.
