Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson believes he has already spotted a “clear and refreshing difference” between new Ibrox boss Danny Rohl and Southampton manager Russell Martin – and says it’s a trait that is quickly winning over the Rangers support.
Ferguson, speaking after assessing Rohl’s early impact at Ibrox, praised the German’s directness, intensity, and refusal to overcomplicate simple footballing ideas. According to Ferguson, that contrasts noticeably with Martin’s more possession-heavy, methodical approach, which some fans feel can be slow and predictable.
“What strikes me about Rohl straight away is his clarity,” Ferguson said. “He talks in simple football language. No overthinking, no long speeches about philosophy – just what he wants, how he wants it, and why. Rangers fans love that.”
Ferguson highlighted that Rohl’s early training-ground clips and media interactions show a coach who is hands-on, vocal, and demanding, placing maximum emphasis on pressing, aggression, and quick transitions.
“Rohl is energetic, animated, and very direct with the players,” he added. “You can see the players understand him instantly. With Martin, everything feels far more process-driven and slower to implement.”
That difference, Ferguson believes, is why Rohl has made an instant impression at Ibrox, despite the scale of the rebuild ahead of him.
Supporters, too, have warmed to the 35-year-old’s straightforward communication, intensity in sessions, and visible passion on the touchline – qualities many felt were missing in the previous regime.
As Rangers continue navigating a challenging period, Ferguson insists Rohl’s personality and clarity give the club and fanbase a renewed sense of direction.
