Muscat, who has been strongly linked with the vacant Rangers job, is edging closer to a return to Glasgow — this time as the club’s permanent manager. The Australian, a former Rangers defender under Dick Advocaat, is believed to be one of the frontrunners as the board look to end their search for a new head coach.
Speaking ahead of Rangers’ clash with Dundee United, Smith admitted that Muscat’s passion, intensity and knowledge of the club could make him a natural fit for the role.
“Kevin’s the kind of person who understands what Rangers are all about,” said Smith. “He’s probably the sort of manager this club needs right now — someone who can handle the pressure, bring discipline, and get the players playing with that edge again.”
Muscat has impressed in managerial spells with Melbourne Victory, Yokohama F. Marinos and Shanghai Port, earning a reputation for attacking football and a relentless winning mentality.
Rangers supporters, still reeling from a difficult spell under Russell Martin, are hoping Muscat’s potential arrival could spark a turnaround both domestically and in Europe.
“He knows what success looks like here,” Smith added. “If he does come in, he’ll get the full backing of everyone around the club — we all want to see Rangers back on top.”
The Rangers board are expected to finalise talks with Muscat’s representatives in the coming days, with an official announcement possible before next week’s fixture.
