Rangers dealt monumental blow in reported pursuit of new centre-back amid injury crisis

Bamo Meïte is the latest name being linked to Rangers as the Ibrox side look to reinforce their injury-plagued backline amid a hectic winter schedule.

Rangers are counting the cost of injuries to John Souttar, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Leon Balogun, James Tavernier and Jack Butland at a crucial juncture of the season.

With Dujon Sterling going off the pitch injured in the 3-3 draw with Hibs and Robin Propper preparing to serve a suspension many expect the Gers to sign defensive reinforcements this month.

But just as those links to Marseille defender Bamo Meïte offer a glimmer of hope to Rangers fans, along comes the Ligue 1 club’s manager to all but shoot down the reports.

Bamo Meite nursing ‘serious injury’

Despite Marseille closing in on a deal for Italian international Luiz Felipe, Rangers interest in Bamo Meïte appears to have been short-lived.

That’s because Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi has confirmed the 23-year-old Ivorian centre-back is currently nursing a serious injury problem.

Meïte has only made three Ligue 1 appearances this season and ex-Brighton manager De Zerbi claims the defender now faces weeks on the sidelines.

“Bamo Meïte was not on the bench because of a foot problem,” said De Zerbi, as quoted by the Daily Record.

Rangers await transfer update from board

Rangers face a serious defensive injury crisis heading into a tough run of Scottish Premiership matches and the situation has already threatened to derail the club’s season.

Philippe Clement was asked about potential defensive reinforcements following the disastrous draw with Hibs and claimed that Patrick Stewart will be addressing fans on the situation this week.

“That’s something that Patrick will address towards you guys,” said Clement when asked about new additions this January.

“He wants to give that explanation what is the plan for January.

“I think every manager feels that (they could use more players), and for sure in the situation we are.

“For the moment with injuries and everything, but there’s also the situation of the club. You need to pay it also, and I’m not the one who can pay that. I don’t have that money.”
