INVESTIGATION:Police Scotland have concluded their investigation into the controversial water bottle incident involving Rangers player Vaclav Cerny during the Old Firm derby on March 16.

The incident occurred after Rangers’ late goal secured a 2-1 victory over Celtic, when Cerny, in an emotional celebration, sprayed water towards Celtic supporters. Following an inquiry, Police Scotland confirmed that no criminal offense had been committed, and the matter would not result in any further legal action.

Despite the police’s decision, the incident sparked strong reactions from both sides. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers condemned Cerny’s actions, calling them “disrespectful” and urging players to celebrate in a manner that does not provoke opposition fans. Rodgers emphasized that while celebrations are part of football, they should not cross the line into disrespectful behavior.

On the other hand, Rangers’ interim manager Barry Ferguson defended Cerny, suggesting that the intensity of the derby led to emotional outbursts. Ferguson stated that while celebrations are natural, they should remain respectful, yet he understood the passion behind the act.

Cerny, who is currently on loan from Wolfsburg, was reportedly baffled by the controversy. He argued that the reactions to the incident were “absurd” and attributed his behavior to the heightened emotions of the match.

Although the police investigation has been closed, the Scottish Football Association (SFA) is still considering potential disciplinary action. This could involve sanctions such as a ban for Cerny, depending on the SFA’s evaluation of the incident.
