Rangers strive to ‘avoid another liquidation event’ at Ibrox after £5m bid
Rangers are focusing on avoiding liquidation rather than winning trophies despite Jack Butland rejecting a move to Nottingham Forest, says Gary Keown.
The Englishman revealed last year that he had rejected a move to the Premier League outfit, insisting it was a “straight no” to the Reds [Football Scotland].
It is unclear whether the 31-year-old would regret this decision but after a rough patch at Ibrox in recent months, Keown has speculated whether this is the case.
Writing for the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 26 January (page 94), the columnist suggested that the Gers’ ambitions of just avoiding another liquidation may frustrate the keeper.
He said: “Butland must also question his own wisdom in saying ‘no’ to Forest via his agent. Back then, he spoke of their being so much more for him to achieve in Glasgow.

“If only he knew then what he knows now, that there’s no money in the coffers and his manager is telling the world that this is a long-term project about bringing through young players and avoiding another liquidation event instead of winning actual trophies.
“Not exactly what a soon-to-be 32-year-old who recently held hopes of an England recall requires.”

This has seen plenty of interest in his signature since joining from Crystal Palace but no deal has progressed as Butland opted to remain in Govan.
It would be interesting to know if the former Stoke City ace knew about the ambitions in the Ibrox boardroom before rejecting a move away.
Given his age and links to the Premier League and the England national side, the Gers’ number one will want to achieve as much as he can before he retires.

That may not prove to be possible with the Light Blues right now as Patrick Stewart looks to steady the ship with the view to move forward slowly.
Although this may result in difficult times under Clement or whoever else in the coming months and years, it could be a wise move for the long term.
In other Rangers news, another approach has been made to sign a player from Ibrox after a red tape report.
