Rangers takeover: Dave King breaks silence on bombshell 49ers news, shares one wish

Dave King has spoken for the first time on the imminent Rangers takeover, while sharing his wish for the club going forward.

The 49ers Enterprise are closing in on a deal in principle to finalise a takeover at Ibrox, ushering in a new era for the Gers.

While confirmation of a deal may still be months away, and questions remains over the multi-club model that involves Leeds United, talks appear to be moving in the right direction.

And King, who owns more shares in Rangers than anyone else with a 13-per-cent stake, has now spoken out on the proposed takeover for the first time.

King gave his thoughts in an interview with The Scottish Sun [21 February], in which he discussed his own role at the Gers and what he wishes to happen to the club going forward.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

The former chairman’s 13-per-cent is marginally more than Douglas Park’s 12 per cent, while George Taylor has 10 per cent and four others have below that figure.

King is prepared to sell his shares to 49ers Enterprises, led by Paraag Marathe, as his “lasting legacy” to the Gers.

And he is hopeful that others follow suit in order for some parity to be restored in the Ibrox boardroom.

King confirmed that, while no deal has been concluded yet, “discussions have proceeded in a constructive manner.”

He added: “I believe that the present investors have ‘investment fatigue’ and that any new investor should be of unquestionable wealth to not only inject much-needed funds into the club immediately, but also have funds in reserve to support the rebuilding programme that will be required both on and off the pitch.”

Rangers set for new era under 49ers Enterprises

While nothing is yet official, it is looking more and more likely that this 49ers takeover at Rangers will actually now go through.

Some may be a little nervous to see the Gers under complete control of Americans, but they have had success at the other ‘soccer’ team in their stable, Leeds United.

Rangers Shareholder Shareholding (rounded upwards)

Marathe will be the man calling the shots and, in an ideal world, as many of the minority shareholders as possible will be bought out.

Having so many different people holding sway helps nobody. As King says, it makes sense for one person – or franchise, in this case – to oversee everything at Rangers.

King is doing the right thing in selling up. Let’s hope others follow suit and a deal can be completed this side of the summer.
