Russell Martin rejects jobs as new Rangers manager appointment now close
Rangers’ incoming new owners, the 49ers Enterprises, are already under pressure to appoint a new permanent manager at Ibrox.
Although there were suggestions that interim boss Barry Ferguson could be given the permanent role, his exit has now been confirmed.
However, all eyes are now on the incoming investors, with an appointment potentially days away.
Russell Martin update provided in Rangers hunt
With Rangers in the hunt for a new boss, there have been plenty of names linked with the vacancy.
According to The Scottish Sun (19 May), though, there are now only two candidates left in the running in Russell Martin and Steven Gerrard.
The newspaper claims that talks are currently underway and a decision could be made by the end of the week, giving Rangers some direction.
Martin is said to have been in discussions with the 49ers for some time now and, crucially, has passed up on other jobs, suggesting he could be holding out for this opportunity.
Gerrard is also being mooted for a return to Ibrox, though, and final conversations are expected this week with Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell.
The clock is ticking, though, and a call is expected to be made soon.

Rangers and Martin could be a good fit
After struggling with Southampton in the Premier League, Martin is looking to rebuild his reputation and show what he can do, so his ambitions at Ibrox would surely be high.
The reason the 39-year-old struggled in England’s top flight was due to his eagerness to try and dominate possession, and that kind of innovation in a manager is something the 49ers would like to have.
In addition, Martin has shown an ability to work with and develop young talent, something the Light Blues need to be looking at doing if they are to create a sustainable model in Glasgow.
If the former Southampton boss has turned down other jobs, it could well suggest that he feels this is the right opportunity, and surely that’s better than returning to something that’s already been done before in Gerrard.
