Suggestion late Everton bid came via agents – Club moving to secure new contract instead

Sevilla are working to tie full back Juanlu to a new contract, after turning down a deadline day loan offer from Everton for the defender.

That’s according to Diario de Sevilla, who suggest the loan offer from Everton may have came about thanks to his agents working to move him.

The newspaper explains that Sevilla want to tie Juanlu to a new contract as soon as possible, with his current deal expiring in 2026.

They’ve already presented a renewal offer to the player and his agents that would see him extend to 2029. They are now waiting for a response in the next few days.

Their belief is that the player wants to sign a new deal but they’re wary because they also know the full back was being ‘moved around’ at the end of the January transfer window.

This was the work of his entourage, who were attempting to move him abroad and had a loan proposal from Everton on the final day of the window. This arrived at the offices in the Sánchez Pizjuán but was ‘flatly refused’ as Sevilla don’t intend to let one of their best and future projects depart.

Work is now underway to renew Juanlu’s deal instead and get him off his current contract, which expires in 2026 and has a €20m release clause.

Indeed, they want that contract signed before the summer so even if he does leave, it will be for a fee beyond that.

The ball is very much in his court and Sevilla have offered various incentives to him, including taking Jesus Navas’ shirt number next season, but the offer from Everton has now added haste to the proceedings.
