
Cantwell joined Rangers from Norwich City in January 2023, quickly becoming a key figure in midfield. He scored 14 goals in 64 appearances and contributed to the team’s success, including winning the Scottish League Cup. However, following the appointment of Philippe Clement as manager in October 2023, Cantwell’s role diminished. He was relegated to the B-team and submitted two transfer requests, seeking a move away from Ibrox .
In August 2024, Cantwell transferred to Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract. He made an immediate impact, scoring a penalty in a 1–0 victory over Leeds United .
Reflecting on his time at Rangers, Cantwell expressed that the club “felt like a different place” under the new management. He emphasized the importance of being in the right environment to perform at his best and felt that moving to Blackburn was the right decision for his career at 26 .
At Blackburn, Cantwell has regained his confidence and is contributing significantly to the team’s performance in the Championship. His experience at Rangers, while challenging, has provided valuable lessons that he is now applying in his current role.
