Tributes paid as former Rangers star Willie Stevenson dies aged 85
The Leith-born player made more than 100 appearances for the Gers, which saw him lift the league title and the Scottish Cup. He went on to play for Liverpool and Stoke City.

Former Rangers and Liverpool star, Willie Stevenson, has sadly died at the age of 85.
The Leith-born player made more than 100 appearances for the Gers, lifting the league title in 1959 and the Scottish Cup the season after.
Following his Ibrox spell, he moved to Liverpool where he made 241 appearances for the club and scored 18 goals. This included the penalty that sealed a 2-0 semi-final win over Chelsea on the way to Liverpool’s first FA Cup success in 1965.

He was also a key member of the team that won the First Division titles in 1964 and 1966.
Stevenson’s final apperance for Liverpool came in November 1967, three days after marked his Anfield farewell by scoring a late penalty to beat Wolves 2-1.
He went on to have spell with Stoke City, Tranmere Rovers, Vancouver Whitecaps and Limerick before finishing his career at Macclesfield Town.

Paying tribute, Rangers released a statement saying: “Everyone at Rangers is saddened to have learned of the passing of former player Willie Stevenson at the age of 85.
“Stevenson made more than 100 appearances for the Light Blues, lifting the Scottish League title in 1959 and the Scottish Cup the following season.
“After leaving Ibrox in 1962 he moved to Bill Shankly’s Liverpool where he won two First Division titles, one FA Cup and three Charity Shields, before stints with Stoke City, Tranmere Rovers, Vancouver Whitecaps and finishing his career with Macclesfield Town.
“The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with Willie’s family and friends at this sad time.”
Liverpool posted on X: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former player Willie Stevenson. The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Willie’s loved ones at this sad time.
And Stoke City said: “The Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Willie Stevenson, who featured on more than 100 occasions for the Potters between 1967 and 1973.
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Willie’s family and friends.”
