West Ham United Women have paid an emotional tribute to former manager Matt Beard, who tragically passed away last night at the age of 47.
Beard, a respected figure in the women’s game, took charge of the Hammers between 2018 and 2020, famously guiding them to their first-ever Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley in 2019. His work at the club was widely praised for laying the foundations of West Ham’s growth in the Women’s Super League.
In a statement, West Ham said they were “deeply shocked and saddened” by his sudden death, offering their condolences to his family and friends. “Matt made a lasting impact during his time at West Ham United Women, and he will always be remembered fondly by players, staff and supporters,” the club added.
Beard’s managerial career also included two WSL title-winning spells with Liverpool Women, as well as stints with Chelsea Women and Boston Breakers in the United States.
Tributes have poured in across the football world, with colleagues and former players remembering him as not only a talented coach but also a kind and inspiring figure off the pitch.
