National media label £6m Leeds United target ‘flop’ of the match after nightmare display
As Daniel Farke explained following the close of a quiet winter window at Elland Road, anyone arriving at Leeds United must be pretty special if they are to force their way into his rock-solid starting XI.
Who could Leeds realistically sign to battle Manor Solomon and Dan James for a starting spot on the wings, if Willy Gnonto and Largie Ramazani cannot buy a place in the XI at present?
No wonder Louie Barry ended up at Hull City, such was the desire from Aston Villa to secure the youngster regular first-team football in the Championship.
Leeds United were linked with a host of talented number tens as well. But, as Farke was at pains to point out, nobody should be underestimating Brenden Aaronson’s contribution to the cause.
Further back, the fine form of Ethan Ampadu alongside Joe Rodon means Pascal Struijk may face a battle forcing his way back into the first-team, although two late goals as a substitute during Monday’s 2-1 win over Sunderland should help.
With the probable exception of clean sheet obsessives Burnley, Leeds have three centre-halves who would walk into pretty much every other Championship team sheet. And that’s without mentioning Austria international Max Wober.
With Wober’s future uncertain beyond the season, however, the league-leaders are expected to enter the market for a new centre-half over the summer. Hopefully, in preparation for their Premier League return.
But if Christopher Wooh hopes to be the man chosen from a host of options including Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi – Leeds were linked with the Ligue 1 ace in January – then a truly disastrous performance during Rennes’ 2-0 home defeat to Lille on Sunday will not aid his cause.

Leeds United linked Christopher Wooh sent off in Rennes nightmare
“A game to forget,” write French publication Le Figaro. “That’s how Christopher Wooh’s game can be described.”
You can say that again.
As an expensively-assembled and dramatically-underachieving Rennes side hover nervously above the relegation zone – only five points clear of St Etienne – a solid rearguard action was ki-boshed when Wooh got himself caught on the wrong side of Chuba Akpom and took down the former Middlesbrough striker on the edge of the penalty area.
Wooh got a lucky escape when Akpom missed a first-half penalty following his handball in the box. There would be no reprieve, however, the Cameroon international shown a red card in the 74th minute with the scoreline still goalless.
Well, that was until Lille made their numerical superiority count moments later.
Nabil Bentaleb, on his first appearance for six months after suffering a cardiac arrest in training, enjoyed a comeback for the ages when tapping in the opener. Akpom them made amends for his spot-kick failure to seal the win for Lille.
Wooh one of the ‘flops’ of the Ligue 1 weekend
“Wooh received a second yellow card in the 74th minute, a second yellow card that meant he was sent off,” Le Figaro add. “LOSC scored two goals in the process, proof of the impact of the Cameroonian defender’s exit.”
Wooh was, they sum up quite succinctly, ‘at fault’ as fears of a most unexpected relegation battle grow in Brittany.
“Wooh weighed down Rennes,” add Sport Orange, including the £6 million-rated defender amongst their ‘flops’ of the weekend. “It was clearly not Christopher Wooh’s night.
“In a Rennes defence that was far from sovereign, the Cameroonian was in great difficulty. First of all, he was the one who conceded the penalty missed by Chuba Akpom. He put his team in even greater trouble by receiving a red card for a foul on the Lille striker when he was in the position of last man.
“With one down, Rennes finally cracked in front of their home crowd.”
On a matchday in which Leeds United pulled off a valiant comeback in front of the fawning Elland Road masses – centre-back Pascal Struijk an unlikely hero a coupon-busting brace – Wooh’s own weekend could hardly have ended more differently.
